The best pillow for kids? I tried every kind on my four, so you don’t have to.

Adult, flat, memory foam or no pillow at all: here’s how each one did in our house, scored on what matters for a child.

Why I went down the pillow rabbit hole

The baby monitor was what got me. 11pm, I’m folding laundry, and there’s my 6-year-old on the screen: pillow on the floor, chin folded down on his chest, mouth hanging open. Same the next night. And the next.

Bedtime at our house is a relay race. Four baths, two glasses of water nobody drinks, one missing stuffed giraffe. I wasn’t looking for a new project. But I kept seeing that chin on that chest, then the tired, grumpy mornings, and I honestly didn’t know if it mattered.

So one night at 1am I typed “top rated kids pillow” into Google, like every other worried parent. I got a wall of lists that read like a robot wrote them. None of them answered my real question: which pillow, for which kid, and why?

So I did what you do with four kids. I tested. Over a few months, every kind of pillow we could get our hands on went into rotation across four beds: my 11-year-old, my 8-year-old, my 6-year-old and my 2-year-old, who had just moved into a big-girl bed.

Before we start: if your child snores loudly most nights or seems to struggle for breath, please talk to your pediatrician first. A pillow is a comfort choice, not a fix for that. We had ours checked, and then I went shopping.

What I looked for in a kids pillow

I scored every pillow out of 10 on the four things that kept coming up in our house. These are my scores from real nights with my kids, not a lab test.

  1. Right height for their age

A small head on a tall pillow gets pushed forward, chin toward the chest. Too flat, and the head drops below the shoulder when they sleep on their side.

  2. Holds its shape all night

A pillow that feels great at 8pm and is a pancake by midnight isn’t doing its job at 3am.

  3. Stays cool

Kids run hot. When warmth builds up under their head, they flip, kick and end up sideways.

  4. Easy to live with

Fits a normal pillowcase, survives a sick night, and doesn’t need its own laundry routine.

LittleBear Kids Posture Pillow

4.8/5 · 2,341+ verified reviews (read the reviews)

Best for: kids 2 to 18 who need a pillow that fits them now, and as they grow

  • Child hugging the LittleBear pillow, with labels for the ergonomic contour, TPE honeycomb core, hypoallergenic Tencel surface and breathable 3D mesh
  • LittleBear size chart: Ages 1-3, 18.9 by 11.4 inches, 0.8 to 1.6 inches high; Ages 3-8, 19.7 by 11.8 inches, 1.6 to 2.4 inches high; Ages 8-18, 20.9 by 12.6 inches, 2.4 to 3.5 inches high
  • Child sleeping on their side on the LittleBear pillow next to a bedside lamp
  • Little girl in pajamas asleep on her side on a white LittleBear pillow
  • Boy asleep with a teddy bear, his head resting on the LittleBear pillow

The only option in my test that comes in a height for each age, and the only one still the same shape in the morning.

I’ll be honest: I almost didn’t try it. It looked like one more “posture” pillow, and I’d already been burned by a thin generic one. What changed my mind was the sizing. You don’t buy “a kids pillow.” You pick your child’s age, 1-3, 3-8 or 8-18, and each one is a different height (0.8-1.6 in, 1.6-2.4 in and 2.4-3.5 in). My 2-year-old and my 11-year-old should not be sleeping on the same pillow, and finally they weren’t.

The first thing I noticed was the feel. It’s fuller than the flat kids pillows we’d had: more like a real pillow, just built for a child. LittleBear actually re-made it after parents said their first version felt “like lying on a pancake.” There’s a gentle dip in the middle that holds the head, a raised edge that sits under the neck, and higher ends for my side sleepers.

The second thing was the morning check. Inside is a TPE honeycomb core that springs back instead of squashing down, so the support at 3am matches 8pm. When I peek in now, my 6-year-old’s head is still on the pillow, his chin isn’t folded down on his chest, and the pillow is still on the bed. Small thing. Huge thing.

It stays cool, too. Air moves through the honeycomb and out the 3D mesh sides instead of collecting under the head, and the Lenzing Tencel surface is smooth, hypoallergenic and carries moisture away. My hot-sleeping 8-year-old stopped flipping hers to “the cold side” every hour.

The downsides: the pillow itself is spot-clean only (you wash the pillowcase with the sheets, and it takes a standard 20 x 26 in case). And shipping isn’t next-day, so order before you need it.

What I loved

  • Three heights, one per age band (1-3, 3-8, 8-18)
  • Fuller than flat generic kids pillows, with a contoured centre and neck edge
  • Honeycomb core springs back, so it’s the same shape at 3am
  • Breathable 3D mesh and a hypoallergenic Tencel surface
  • Works for side and back sleepers
  • Fits a standard US pillowcase, and you get 90 nights to try it

Worth knowing

  • Spot-clean only (the pillowcase goes in the wash)
  • Not for babies under 2

Why it beat the flat kids pillow

Same idea, low and soft for a child, but ours squashed to nothing by midnight. LittleBear holds its height.

Why it beat memory foam

Memory foam gave a nice contour but slept warm and kept the dent of her head. The honeycomb springs back and air moves through it.

Memory foam toddler pillow

Best for: parents who want a contoured shape on a budget

A real step up from flat pillows, held back by heat and one-size height.

This was our runner-up, and I understand why so many parents buy one. It has an actual contour, it’s lower than an adult pillow, and the covers usually unzip and go in the wash. My 8-year-old liked it at first.

Two things wore us down. Memory foam softens with body heat and holds the dent of the head, so by morning she was sleeping in a crater. And it slept warm: she’d wake up damp at the hairline and flip it over. Most also come in one height, which is fine for one age and wrong for the rest.

  • Height for their age7
  • Holds its shape all night7
  • Stays cool5
  • Easy to live with7

Pros

  • Contoured shape
  • Lower than an adult pillow
  • Washable covers are common

Cons

  • Slept warm for us
  • Keeps the dent of the head
  • Usually one height for every age
  • Some smell “new” out of the box

Flat generic kids pillow (the “pancake”)

Best for: travel, or a backup at grandma’s

Cute, cheap and soft, and flat as a pancake by midnight.

This is the pillow most of us start with: small, soft, often a cute print, and usually machine-washable. For a toddler moving into a bed, it feels like the safe choice.

Ours started thin and got thinner. Within weeks it squashed down under a sleeping head, and for my side sleepers that meant their head sank below their shoulder. My 6-year-old started bunching his blanket under his cheek to make up the height. Same height for a 3-year-old and a 10-year-old, too.

  • Height for their age4
  • Holds its shape all night3
  • Stays cool6
  • Easy to live with9

Pros

  • Inexpensive
  • Soft
  • Usually fully machine-washable
  • Fits toddler beds

Cons

  • Compresses flat overnight
  • No contour
  • One height for every age

Adult pillow

Best for: honestly, nobody under 12

Free, already in the closet, and built for adult shoulders.

This is where my 6-year-old’s story started. An adult pillow is shaped for adult shoulders. Under a small head it sits too tall and too wide, which is exactly how I ended up watching his chin on his chest on the monitor. Most nights it ended up on the floor anyway.

  • Height for their age2
  • Holds its shape all night6
  • Stays cool5
  • Easy to live with8

Pros

  • You already own one
  • Cases are easy to find
  • Machine-washable options

Cons

  • Too tall and too wide for a child’s frame
  • Pushes the head forward, chin toward the chest
  • Too big for a toddler bed

No pillow at all

Best for: babies and toddlers under 2 (my score is for kids 3 and up)

The right answer for the littlest ones. Less so once they’re side sleepers.

For babies, no pillow is the standard safe-sleep advice, and it’s what I did with all four. My 2-year-old went pillow-free until she moved into her big-girl bed. If your child is under 2, please skip the pillow and ask your pediatrician when to add one.

For my older kids it didn’t work. Lying on their side, there’s a gap between head and mattress the size of their shoulder, and they fill it with whatever’s nearby. In our house, that was a stuffed giraffe.

  • Height for their age3
  • Holds its shape all nightn/a
  • Stays cool10

Pros

  • Nothing to buy
  • Nothing to wash
  • Right for under-2s

Cons

  • Leaves a gap for side sleepers
  • Kids improvise with toys and blankets

What I’d tell a friend before buying a kids pillow

Looking for the best toddler pillow? Start with height, not cuteness.

When you’re choosing the best toddler pillow, low matters more than prints. A toddler’s pillow should be the lowest you can find, around an inch high, and only once they’re 2 and in a big bed. As kids grow, the pillow should grow too. These are the heights LittleBear uses for its three sizes:

  • Ages 1-30.8-1.6 inToddler
  • Ages 3-81.6-2.4 inKids
  • Ages 8-182.4-3.5 inOlder kids, teens

What to look for

  • A height matched to your child’s age, not “one size for kids”
  • A fill that springs back, so the height is still there at 3am
  • Breathable materials, because kids run hot
  • A shape that works for side and back sleeping
  • A size that fits a standard pillowcase

Mistakes I made so you don’t have to

  • Handing down an adult pillow because it was in the closet
  • Buying the flattest “kids” pillow I could find and calling it safe
  • Buying one pillow for kids five years apart
  • Ignoring heat (a sweaty kid is a restless kid)
  • Adding a pillow before 2 because the crib looked empty

Try it for 90 nights

New pillows take a few nights to get used to, so give it a few weeks. If it isn’t right for your child within 90 nights, email help@trylittlebear.com for a full refund. Details are in the refund policy.

Questions other parents ask me

What’s the best pillow for kids?

The one that’s the right height for their age and still the same shape in the morning. In our house that was LittleBear, which comes in three heights (1-3, 3-8 and 8-18). If you want a cheaper option, a memory foam toddler pillow was our runner-up.

What is the best toddler pillow?

For toddlers 2 and up, look for the lowest pillow you can find that doesn’t squash flat. LittleBear’s Ages 1-3 size is 0.8-1.6 in high. Under 2? Skip the pillow and ask your pediatrician.

What age should a child start using a pillow?

Most families start around 2, when a toddler moves into a bed. Under 2, the standard safe-sleep advice is no pillow.

Is LittleBear a memory foam pillow?

No. It has a TPE honeycomb core with Invista antibacterial cotton and pearl cotton fill. Memory foam softens with heat and holds the dent of the head; the honeycomb springs back.

Which size should I choose?

Pick your child’s age: 1-3, 3-8 or 8-18. If they sit right on the line, or are bigger than most kids their age, size up.

Does it fit a normal pillowcase?

Yes, every size fits a standard US pillowcase (20 x 26 in). Toddler pillowcases (13 x 18 in) are too small.

How do I clean it?

Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap, then let it air dry fully. Use a pillowcase and wash that with your sheets.

Will it stop my child snoring?

I can’t promise that, and LittleBear doesn’t either. It’s a comfort pillow, not a medical device. Loud snoring most nights is a question for your pediatrician.

I have more than one kid. Can I mix sizes?

Yes. Pick an age for each pillow: 2 pillows are $104.99 and 3 are $134.99.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

Orders are processed in 1-3 business days, and US delivery then usually takes 6-10 business days. Shipping is $4.97 flat.

What if it isn’t right for my child?

You have 90 nights. Email help@trylittlebear.com for a full refund. Return shipping is on you; the refund policy has the details.

The bottom line from a mom of four

After months of swapping pillows between four beds, LittleBear is the one still on all of them. It comes in a height for each age, it’s fuller than the flat kids pillows, and it’s the same shape at 3am as at bedtime.

If you’d rather spend less, a memory foam toddler pillow was the next best in our house. Just watch the heat.
